Full roadside safety guidance
Motorways: If possible, leave at the next exit or service area. Otherwise, use an emergency area or hard shoulder. Only exit on the side away from traffic if safe, and wait behind a safety barrier. Do not put out a warning triangle on a motorway or attempt roadside repairs. If stranded in a live lane, or unable to exit safely, stay belted with hazard lights on and call 999.
Other roads: Stop safely away from traffic if possible, switch on hazard lights as appropriate and do not put yourself at risk. Call for help from a safe place.
When calling: Have your location, registration and a brief description of the problem ready if safe. Tell us if the vehicle is in a hazardous position.
